Significance

Considered one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar.

The Story

The word "Akshaya" means "that which never diminishes." On this day, the Treta Yuga began, and the sacred Ganges descended from heaven to earth. The Pandavas, during their years of exile, received the Akshaya Patra — a divine vessel from the Sun God that provided unlimited food, ensuring they would never go hungry.

It is also believed that Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha on this day. Lord Kubera, the celestial treasurer, received his wealth and position on Akshaya Tritiya. Every act of merit — prayer, donation, or new beginning — performed on this day is said to bring unlimited, ever-growing returns.

Modern observance has made this one of the most auspicious days for purchasing gold and starting new ventures. The belief is that investments made on Akshaya Tritiya grow perpetually, never losing value — just as the name promises.
