Significance

Devoted to Saraswati, goddess of knowledge and arts.

The Story

After creating the world, Lord Brahma surveyed his creation and found it lacking — everything was functional but devoid of beauty, music, and expression. The world was silent. He took water from his kamandalu (water vessel) and sprinkled it as an offering. From the droplets arose a radiant goddess dressed in white, seated on a white lotus, holding a veena (lute), a book, a mala (rosary), and a pot of sacred water.

This was Saraswati — the goddess of knowledge, music, arts, and wisdom. As she played her veena, the world came alive with sound, rhythm, and speech. Rivers began to flow with melody, birds found their songs, and humans discovered language. Brahma, enchanted, named the fifth day of spring (Vasant Panchami) in her honor.

The festival marks the beginning of preparations for spring. Students, musicians, and scholars especially revere this day, placing books and instruments before the goddess for her blessings.

  5. Recite Saraswati Vandana and the mantra "Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah"
  6. Prepare and distribute yellow rice and saffron sweets
