About the Hindu Panchang

The panchang (ā¤Ēā¤žāĨā¤šā¤žā¤™āĨā¤—) is the traditional Hindu almanac that describes the five limbs of time — Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana (half-lunar-day). Together these determine the auspiciousness of any moment.

Panchang calculations are location-specific because sunrise and sunset times — which anchor each day's tithi — differ by city. The panchang shown here is computed for Irving, TX using precise astronomical algorithms.

Understanding each element

  • Tithi — The lunar day, based on the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, split across Shukla (waxing) and Krishna (waning) Paksha.
  • Nakshatra — The lunar mansion the Moon occupies. There are 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13°20' of the zodiac and carrying distinct energies.
  • Yoga — Computed from the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 yogas; some are auspicious (Siddhi, Shubha), others inauspicious (Vishkambha, Vyatipata).
  • Karana — Half a tithi (6° of Sun-Moon separation). There are 11 karanas in the cycle, repeating every lunar month.
  • Vara — The weekday, each governed by a planet. Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn).
